Fasching 2017

On February 26th, we headed over to our good friend's house to celebrate Fasching.  Fasching is the Roman Catholic Shrovetide carnival.  Traditionally it was not only a feast before Lent but also a time during which the rules and order of daily life were subverted.  This gave rise to such customs as handing over the keys of the city to a council of fools.  It also inspired noisy costumed parades and masked balls and more.

David and Kay dressed up and heading to the parade.

The boys didn't want to wear full costumes, so we bought masks for them.

The three amigos - waiting for the parade to start.

The parade is finally starting!!  The streets were lined for miles.

This costume was amazing - that is all real wood, grass, and moss.

There are many different costumes and groups that marched in the parade.

Michael, David, and Petra were on the other side of the street working to get candy.  By the end of the parade both boys' bags were completely full!!

AJ and I on the other side.  The boys said it was hard to see through the masks.

I thought these little guys were soooo cute!!!

They were followed by a band and a cannon - it was a LOUD cannon as well.

I liked this costume as well!  He looked like he was having a great time!!

This was the band that followed him.

Through the whole parade people were trying to get food into the mouth of the dragon.  Nobody ever made it, but Michael was able to get a lot of candy because of it.  They ended up just sticking an apple in there.  It was a lot of fun!!!  We went back to the house after that and played some Uno!!  It was a great to see our friends and enjoy our last Fasching in Germany!!
