On Saturday, September 3rd, we headed back into town.
The boys said I already walked them too much and they were protesting for a break. They only received 2 minutes. LOL
Then off we went on our grand adventure into Salzburg.
The boys at a fountain of Poseidon. The weather was beautiful as you can see from shorts and sunglasses!
This is the Salzburg Art Project 2007 "Sphaera." The sculpture is about nine meters in height, including the pedestal. It represents a male figure standing in a relaxed pose on a golden sphere. Black trousers, white shirt, neutral attitude and expression - this man might be a nodding acquaintance, or he might be everyman.
This is the way we got up to the Fortress.
David enjoying a little quiet and the view up on top.
Our traditional coin gathering. The boys have a great time collecting them!
The view from a top of the Fortress of Salzburg!
It is such a beautiful city!!! And we couldn't have asked for better weather!
We love that they use lions in so many thing!!!
Michael checking out the well they used when the fortress was a little less modern.
The boys standing on one of the cannons for the defense.
This is puppets used for Mozart's last opera "The Magic Flute", in Vienna on September 30th, 1791.
Of course they have to have "The Sound of Music."
This was showing how the fortress was being built. Construction of the Hohensalzburg Fortress was begun by Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg as a show of the Catholic Church's power. It was built 400 feet above the Salzach River, this fortress was never really used. That was the idea. It was a good investment - so foreboding, nobody attacked the town for nearly a thousand years.
Here you can see how they used the horses to pull up the items needed to build the fortress.
When Napoleon stopped by, they wisely surrendered and it was used as a military barracks. After that it was opened to the public in the 1860s by Habsburg Emperor Franz Josef.
David was giving AJ a lesson on the different military guns.
I liked their little figures showing off their musical talents.
The boys already needed a break from the walking, or they were just waiting on me to finish up taking pictures. LOL
A view of the church up in the fortress.
My handsome boys!!! Michael always climbing!
Here are the old rails they used to bring up what they needed in the fortress.
This was called the horse gate - rightly named since this is where the horses entered and exited. :-)
We decided to walk down from the fortress the boys took off running.
These pictures always make my heart happy - especially when it was their idea to take it!!
This was inside the Salzburg Cathedral. It was one of the first Baroque buildings north of the Alps. It was consecrated in 1628, during the Thirty Years' War.
They had some beautiful architecture in there. The Salzburg's archbishop was technically the top papal official north of the Alps, but the city managed to steer clear off the war. With its rich salt productions, it had enough money to stay out of the conflict and carefully maintain its independence from the warring sides, earning it the nickname "Fortified Island of the Peace."
A beautiful organ!! I love them!!!
Here are the side organs to go with the big one up top!!!!
I loved the top of the church on the inside!!!!
We had to have some ice cream because next I was dragging them on the Sound of Music tour!!!
David and I on the bus and ready to go. Thankfully he is such a great sport about it and even did the sing along with me!!!
This is where they do the famous puppet show of "The Sound of Music."
This is a picture of the Fortress from the back side.
This is where they filmed the big boat tipping scene. The house was never used that you see here. The littlest girl couldn't swim and they had to do a couple of takes and on the last one, the boat tipped over too soon and she almost drowned. At that point she wanted to go home and didn't want to continue filming. They bribed her with sweets and she gained quite a bit of weight and Christopher Plummer refused to carry her on the final scene.
This is where the gazebo was. Too many tourists were trampling the grounds, so they moved it.
Here are the trees that they climbed and played in when the Captain was coming home.
The famous gazebo!!!! But this one is a little smaller and used for only shots from the outside.
My monkeys climbing whenever they can!
David was happy when they started serving beer on the trip. That made it a little easier for him. LOL
You can see the gate a little bit, this is where she was singing on her way to meet the family and the gate.
The bridge they were singing on when they were headed to their picnic.
It is such beautiful country out here!!!
There were three lakes in the area, it looked like a great day for a swim!
My very handsome boys!!!
I am not sure if you can see it at the top, but it is the tallest hotel you can find in Austria.
Here is a little closer view so you can see it a little better.
Next we headed to the church where they were married. When we arrived there was an actual wedding taking place.
The church was HUGE!!!
It was neat to be able to see all the places that they filmed and picture the parts of the movie.
Of course I have to get my picture of the organ!!!
They told us about some yummy desserts so of course we had to try them!!!
Michael said I needed to be in the picture too!!!
The boys running through the big grass field having a BALL!!! It is so fun to watch them!!!
This was our bus for the afternoon!!! Cheesy huh?!? But I had a great time!!
David and his boys!!! :-)
Michael being goofy!!! I love that smile!!!!
This little girl was hilarious staring at the unicorn!!
This was the fountain they danced around while in their play clothes.
The boys walking where they were running!!! Can you picture it?!? I sure can!!
The statues at the beginning of the gardens. It was a fun afternoon and the boys were good sports hanging with me during the tour!! We headed back to the apartment for some much needed nourishment! It was a great and long day!!!!
