Medival Market in Mainz

On Saturday we went down to a wonderful Medieval market in Mainz.  Mainz is a wonderful town and one that I want to go back and do some exploring.  There are some really cool buildings that we will get down there to check out sooner or later.  One nice thing is that Mainz is only an hour away.

So I know that graffiti is bad and against the law, but I just had to take a picture of a few of I would almost have to say are really works of art.  This is only a portion of what was down there where we parked.

This is a view of the Rhine river.  The tallest building you can see is the Mainz Cathedral which is one place that I really want to go to.  The Rhine sure is a beautiful river.

This boat was a floating restaurant - the boys thought it was really cool!

There was another carnival across the Rhine river.  The boys wanted to go to that one, but all I could see was euros flying out of my pockets :-)

This was one of the first people that we saw dressed up!  I couldn't believe how many were dressed up, I would say about 2/3 of the people were dressed up and not just a little.

Another couple on their way into the market - and no these weren't people that had booths there.

This was an old time swing ride, the gentleman there in the middle turned the wheel and made it go.  The boys had a great time!!!

Michael on the swing, and no it probably wasn't the safest thing, but the boys did have fun and are still in one piece.

Check out the lady on the right, look at the legs, yes I believe she is supposed to look like a ram - but still not sure why.

Here they were roasting full pigs - Michael had a sandwich, well he ate some of the ham and shared with the rest of us.  David ended up having a steak sandwich which was AWESOME!!!  We also bought some really yummy fresh bread, one was cinnamon and sugar and the other had chocolate in it.

They had a parade going through the market with a band, dancers and

jugglers!!  It was pretty cool!

This was the second ride that we let the boys go on.  They were self-propelled.  They were hard to get going and they needed a little bit of help, but a good time was had by all.

Here is AJ and his friend Julie enjoying the ride!!

This guy was completely decked out - couldn't believe it!!!  He wasn't even in the sword fighting show that we saw later.

A band was playing and pretty hilarious I guess, all the people who spoke German were laughing.  I still don't know enough to catch what they were saying, only words here and there.

The first "knight" in the show

The old man won - he was pretty funny also so it seemed.

They put on a pretty good show, it was getting colder by the minute though.  I think we all had lost our feelings in our toes, fingers, just about everything.

What was really neat is this beach that was right outside the market.  The boys had a great time playing in the sand and throwing rocks into the water!

Some people having a little bit of exercise down the Rhine - how cool is that?

Michael showing me how he can climb up a steep hill!  By this time mommy and daddy were nice and cold and couldn't feel any of our outer extremities and said it was time to go.  The boys were ready at that time too because they were also cold.  All in all it was a wonderful day spent with some good friends.
